'Horse of the Year' Honors On The Line
Great horse racing blog here for the wagering types.
Big wins by Borrego, Rock Hard Ten and Saint Liam, all scheduled for the $4 million Classic on Oct. 29 at Belmont Park, with the possible entry of a colt that needs no further introduction, Afleet Alex, forms possibly the most star-studded horse race of the year.

Vampires and Cowboy Hats
And, we also found a cowboy hat for Jasmine. And I bought some faux leather and my mom made a really cool vest out of it (complete with tassels). I also bought her a little white blouse. It’s got a lot of lace on it, but hopefully it will work, since it’s all I could find. We’ll have to do a photo shoot of Jasmine sometime this week.

Iron Horse Race
How do you get a horse on a bicycle?
I rode an hour on a stationary bike at the gym this week, keeping my heart rate in the 80% range. Yesterday I rode 34 miles with an average of 21mph (with the last mile at about 24mph). I’ve lightened up on the weight training and bumped up the aerobic activity (added rowing to my workouts) in preperation for the Iron Horse race.

My Visit To Dallas
There are more SUV’s and pick-up trucks then you can shake a stick at. I am not kidding, I would say it is 2:1 Trucks to cars. People really do wear cowboy hats, everywhere, and they love meat.

Differences
Some folks grow up on NASCAR, others on the Kentucky Derby.
After listening to these kids talk about their hobbies, interests, and basic ways of living, I realized that I had very little if not any things in common with them. We dressed differently, ate different foods, watched different shows, and attended different types of social events. When one girl started talking to me about NASCAR, I realized that the closest equivalent of which Vanderbilt students attended was a horse race like the Kentucky Derby or Preakness in Baltimore.

Come As You Aren't
Not sure about this Halloween costume idea.
mine: i would throw on a pair of black jeans……cowboy boots……a tight button up shirt (with loud print)….a cowboy hat……then i would take aluminum foil and tape it to my chest so i could unbutton the shirt and you could see the foil……then i would take posterboard and cut out a guitar to carry around…..and wear a samurai sword over my shoulder…..and there you have it…………..robot samurai garth brooks………

Legendary Hats
Good question!
Shameless plug here... but I'll get to it at the end... So with Houston rappers blowin' up like mad... with the likes of Swisha House, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and Slim Thug... lest us forget The Geto Boys... and Scarface... and all those I'm too lazy to name... how come not more rappers from the South sport the cowboy hat? so this'll probably destroy any cred I may have... if I even had any... haha...

The Hat Makes The Man
Good catch on this CSI character's hat.
When you first look at it, the hat reminds you of a cross between a wide-brimmed “coach richt” sideline straw hat, and a sombrero. Then, at second glance, you get the “sides turned up” look of a cheap cowboy hat. Finally, about the time you decide that it should have a big peacock feather stuck in the side, he takes it off (wouldn’t want to wear it inside)!

Bal'mer
You are Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, is situated in the northern part of the state on the Patapsco River estuary, an arm of Chesapeake Bay. The city is independent and does not fall within any county. Baltimore’s economy is very diverse, with strong financial, legal, and nonprofit service industries. The city also leads in scientific research and development through two highly acclaimed medical institutions, Johns Hopkins Hospital and University of Maryland Hospital. There is also a significant tourist sector. Major attractions include the the National Aquarium, Harborplace, the Maryland Science Center, the Babe Ruth Museum, Fort McHenry National Monument, and Pimlico Race Course, site of the Preakness.

Tuscany
Like most medieval towns, Siena has a series of parking areas where you leave your car and then walk into town. Siena’s Piazza il Campo is rated as one of the finest plazas in Italy. It is a fan shaped public area sloping towards the town hall. The square was completed in 1349 and consists of 9 segments representing the nine folds in the gown of the virgin Mary. (Apologies to any Catholics out there, but I never cease to be amazed at how the RC’s can create some form of symbolism out of every minor and almost insignificant thing. Perhaps that is why they were always referred to as ‘Rock Crushers’ during my old army days). The plaza gets packed with people on the two annual occasions on which a horse race is conducted around its perimeter. It wasn’t that busy while we were there and we enjoyed a nice pizza for lunch and a look at the medieval buildings around the square.

Getting Connor
The story of finding a horse.
I spent weeks scoring 'horse for sale' ads in papers and on the internet. There were a few possible candidates, but usually sold by the time I phoned up about them!

Who Are The True Cowboys?
And I thought cowboys were the true cowboys of America.
Chris Crutcher’s dynamic presentation at AASL’s Friday night Author Banquet brought the audience to tears–and then to their feet in a standing ovation. Crutcher recounted aspects of his creative process, based in part on his experiences as a family therapist, telling of his sources of inspiration for his novel Whale Talk. He praised his audience of librarians for their roles in fighting censorship and in matching up books and young readers, calling librarians “the true cowboys of America.”

Where Are The Sombreros?
Tip of the hat to this Mexican observation.
Well, I’m back in the land of new cars, safety signs, and functioning keyboards. Russell the Moose received a full body search at the hands of a nice Mexican lady wearing rubber gloves, on our way out of Mexico city. And we only made it to the airport an hour before my plane was due to leave, as the bus that was supposed to take three hours to get there took four and a half instead. We toured around inland, and I was the only redhead I saw the whole time I was there - as such, I was stared at rather a lot, which was a little disconcerting. Also, I discovered that real Mexicans do not wear sombreros, they wear cowboy hats - somewhat of a revelation.

Country Music
How southern is country music?
Country music is way too southern. Most of country music stars are from down south. Jack Ingram, for example is from Texas. When you see country music videos, they have country towns in them. People who are famous from country music are usually dressed in cowboy hats and sometimes plaid. Country music is really southern.

Charleston- North Carolina
From a Charleston travelogue, this gem.
Day 2: Went for run along seafront, very cool. Met friend of friend, Elisa, and went to bar in subrub called Mount Pleasant. Very hillbilly, and scary! Got too much attention from cowboy hat wearing dudes. I kissed a mad old woman with fake boobs.

Looking For A Rope?
Cowboys and sailors are bound to have good rope.
I thought that if I had a towrope that I could just tow her small car since my fuel was still doing okay. We slowly came upon a rural house that had a sign advertising horses for sale. I figured they must have a good rope they would be willing to sell to us.
