Taming The Night-Mare

horses american standard bred Working to transform Clancy into a great mare from a nightmare.
We have an American Standard Bred Mare named Clancy, who to the best of our knowledge is around 14 years old (We have had her for the last 5 years.) She is a beautiful and strong mare, but she has got serious attitude. She is contrary and difficult for me, and even worse for others. She would buck, nip, and flatten her ears just to let us know when she didn’t want to do something; which was often.

Sleep Tight

horse sleeping A useful report on horse bedding and supplies.
If you use wood pellets for horse bedding, you may have heard of the brand Equine Fresh. There are many brands of wood pellets out there and I suspect there will be many more since wood pellets are quickly becoming the preferred bedding for horse owners around the U.S.

Walk Your Horse Like A Dog

horse dog A nice post on walking with your horse.
Yes, I did say walk your horse like a dog. By that I mean lead your horse by the halter and take him for a walk like you would your dog. I have done this over the years with my horses and I think it is one the best ways to bond with your horse.

Natural Training

horse natural training Some ideas on natural horse training and horse equipment.
What is Natural Horsemanship anyway? The answer may depend on who you ask. The most common definition I could find is training based on communication with the horse. We have all seen the advertisements on television or in magazines. Images of seemingly ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things with horses. Riding bridleless, Jumping over obstacles, or simply just walking onto a trailer they had always refused.

Horses Are Animals

horse on trail Click through for more about Joanie and the horse after they left the barn.
Got an email this morning from Joanie about a long time regular Barb. When she's not riding, or at her "day job" she can be found mucking stalls, feeding horses, and doing whatever is "wanted and needed" A true gift to the barn.

Racing In An Italian Medieval Town

horse racing siena If you're visiting the foothill towns of Italy, check out the Palio in Sienna.

However, Siena has its own share of action. Once a year, its quiet streets will suddenly erupt into screams and shouts, during the days leading to the annual bareback horse race. It’s traditional for the neighborhoods to compete against each other, and bands march through the “enemy’s” territory and challenge them to a race. The people of Siena are excellent horsemen and as you watch them riding bareback on near-wild stallions, you’ll think that running with the bulls is child’s play.

Yesterday's News

horse race newspaper From a nice reminisce of newspapers, remember when you could read about horse races?

But the old papers also tell a story that was good as well as bad, of lives knit together and whole, and a better day coming. Against the desolation and boredom of village life, early Wausau had Santa Claus, candy stores, a singing club, the Schützenverein, entertainments, theatricals, edifying lectures, a marching band, school masters, horse races, county fairs, and enough camaraderie and buoyant boosterism to fire a thousand dreams.
