From a nice reminisce of newspapers, remember when you could read about horse racesBut the old papers also tell a story that was good as well as bad, of lives knit together and whole, and a better day coming. Against the desolation and boredom of village life, early Wausau had Santa Claus, candy stores, a singing club, the Schützenverein, entertainments, theatricals, edifying lectures, a marching band, school masters, horse races, county fairs, and enough camaraderie and buoyant boosterism to fire a thousand dreams.
