Never Fall in Love With a Horse
The sad story of Barbaro's race at the Preakness.
Unfortunately, America didn’t know the rule, and last spring, we fell in love with a horse called Barbaro. But we weren’t the first to fall. This extraordinary article in Vanity Fair recounts Barbaro’s story from the inside — through the eyes of the owners, trainers, doctors and jockeys who helped hone him into a Kentucky Derby champion, and then tried to save his life after his devastating injury at the Preakness.

I own 2 horses on my Kentucky horse farm and both are racetrack rejects. One was too slow, the other was a bleeder. I've retrained them to do English riding (eventing, dressage, etc). They are magnificent creatures, and the world is a little less brighter when one as exceptional as Barbaro is no longer with us.

Barbaro suffered a great injury and paid the dearest price for it. We SHOULD LOVE ALL OUR HORSES. They are all a GIFT for which we take for granted. RIP - Barbaro, Ruffian, Ferdinand and many countless others who have died for us. I love my horse and saved her from racing.
