I Love A Good Meme
From a list of memes, the time this blogger felt most out of place.
…was at a party where everyone did a hoedown in their cowboy boots, and I wasn’t wearing cowboy boots.

An American Royal Commission
An artist's commissioned work features cowboy boots!
With this painting, I am pushing my style into a whole new direction that I’d never really thought about. It’s what I’d call an over-the-couch or mantle kind of painting, 44.5″ long by 15″ tall. I’ve decided to call it “Line Dance,” it has 5 high-fashion cowboy boots lined heel-to-toe. The boots are bright and highly designed.

Happy Halloween!
Cowboy boots are part of many Halloween costumes.
We had a Halloween party at work today. The theme was “The West” but you could dress up as anything you wanted. I wore jeans and a large cat cowboy shirt that my brother and sil gave me from Arizona. It’s a really cute shirt. It’s got three cute kitties on it and they are wearing cowboy hats and cowboy boots and on the back it shows there butts with their tail up in the air. So it was quite appropriate! LOL! It is very large on me which looked good too. I also had a cowboy hat.

The Horses Still Run Wild Here
Siblings, horses, and cowboy boots.
My brave Sgt. Major brother, who is a year younger than me, (and leaving for Iraq soon) didn’t fare as well with Scout. He simply wasn’t as interested in Scout as he was in the Cowboy boots he got every year and the kicking tee for his football but I recall that almost everytime he climbed up on Scout he would get bucked off.

Journal Part I: Colorado, Wyoming, And Montana
This blogger doesn't like illegal aliens.
We headed north along the great Rocky Mountains with snow-capped peaks west of us. In Cheyenne, we passed colorful four foot tall cowboy boots in the town square signifying that great ranch and horsemen state. At the capitol building, a counter protest group drove a pickup with the American flag flying from the back, but alongside it, a Mexican flag flew with it. That made our blood boil because every soldier from Valley Forge to Vietnam to Iraq did not die for open borders and allowance for illegal invaders that choose anarchy to ent

Cowboy Boots
Once a tomboy, always a tomboy.
From birth I've always been the tomboyish type, always hated wearing dresses, wanted toy guns for probably the first 10 or so birthdays, wore cowboy boots with shorts, etc. I am still carry vestiges of this persuasion in my preference for pants (see Low-Rider Jeans post), and it takes something on the magnitude of a dear friend's wedding in order for me to (1) wear a dress or (2) wear makeup.

Texas, 1981
Images of growing up in Texas.
No, the real shit I was referring to above has nothing to do with my choice of girlfriend, and everything to do with the few other guys and girls I encountered that year who listened to the same music, and found themselves somewhat ostracized and un-popular because of it. Some of them caved, I saw - they started wearing cowboy boots, or Black Sabbath T-shirts, and gravitating towards either the shitkicker or freak cliques, becoming a sort of sad shadow group of Johhny-come-latelies to these crews. Those of us who either didn’t care about belonging or actively didn’t want to belong kept to our wild music and our wild wardrobes, and knitted even more tightly together as a result of it. Somehow, the wild music people usually ended up with the best herbiage, a sampling of pills stolen from each other’s parents, and every now and then, some blotter. Oh, and beer. Good God, the beer. Someone always had a brother or sister who was of age, and someone was always able to come up with either enough money or enough whining to convince said older sibling to provide the beer. Coors, for the most part - this was Texas, 1981.

Cowboys And Nutcrackers
I've always thought Nutcracker would be a great name for a horse, but others think it's a cowboy ballet.
Little did I know when I took my walk in the park yesterday, I would be in for a special treat. Looking into the creek bed, I saw her. A ballerina extraordinaire, performing her rendition of the nutcracker suite in cowboy boots. How could you not stop to watch, capturing that Kodak moment. But, as I soon discovered, I was not the only one capturing her performance, as the final photo will show. A special “Thank You” to that ballerina, whoever you were! Bravo… Bravo…

Islam And Terrorism
An interesting description of Mohammad Sidique Khan, one of the London suicide bombers.
His name was Mohammad Sidique Khan but all his friends called him Sid. In his teenage years Sid went on a trip to the US andj when he returned he was determined to get an US citizenship. He liked it so much that he was wearing cowboy boots and leather jacket. He also hanged with English white boys. One of his school friends described him as an “English lad”. In short - Sid was very English. Moreover, Sid never went to a Mosque, never took Coran classes in school and even married a Hindu woman which provoked all kinds of bad feelings from his Pakistani family.

Not sure about this Halloween costume idea.
mine: i would throw on a pair of black jeans……cowboy boots……a tight button up shirt (with loud print)….a cowboy hat……then i would take aluminum foil and tape it to my chest so i could unbutton the shirt and you could see the foil……then i would take posterboard and cut out a guitar to carry around…..and wear a samurai sword over my shoulder…..and there you have it…………..robot samurai garth brooks………

Saving It For A Special Night
New spurs and a night with J.D.
Well, I finally got some spurs to go with my cowboy boots. They're pretty nice, and they have jinglebobs on them. I was asked to work some extra hours today, and I ended up working a twelve hour shift. I now know for what it was that I was saving my 5th of Jack. I'm going to go partake of it now. Perhap I'll post a little later, but I doubt it.

Pulling Teeth
Redneck gear isn't that bad, is it?
We laughed about this and both felt kind of sorry for this woman because it seems that he has not changed one iota since I dated him over 10 years ago. Wardrobe still consists mainly of cycling gear and it is like pulling teeth to get him to put "real" clothes on. And when he does you almost wish for the cycling clothes ---- flannel shirts, bad jeans, cowboy boots, etc. Real redneck gear. And forget ever leaving the North Shore, let alone travelling anywhere. Small-minded ignoramus is this boy's middle name.

Brand Mascots
I like the mascots with cowboy boots better.
Another makeover while not so recent was certainly a step in a somewhat fashionable direction. I’m referring to the clothing of the Koolaid Man. Like most brand mascots The Koolaid man is not in fact a man and in this case he is a pitcher of red Koolaid. And until the early 70’s he didn’t even have his Koolaid filled limbs. He does not prance around in the snow so you won’t find a pair of flat front chinos and a cable knit sweater on his Gap wish list. Nor is Mr Koolaid a high fashion pitcher model, you won’t see him sauntering down the catwalk in D&G any time soon. Even the aforementioned Twinkie the Kid only sports strictly work related accessories like a neckerchief, cowboy boots and a hat. So I never really considered the fact that apparently, my entire childhood was bombarded with nude images of an unclothed Koolaid Man.

What Is Country Music?
Pop Music + Cowboy Boots = Country Music?
I have argued for years that "modern country" (or "young country" or "hot country" or whatever the local radio station calls it) is just rock/pop repackaged with cowboy boots, a hat, and a (usually fake) southern drawl. Apparently the labels have decided that its not even necessary to repackage any more, but that just calling it "country music" is enough.

Two Tons Of Steel
Tuesday night I headed out to Greune Hall to see Two Tons of Steel for one of the 10th annual Two Ton Tuesday shows. Every Tuesday night in the summer for the past 10 years this band has been playing Gruene Hall. This one was particularly special since they were recording for a DVD they will be putting out. They had girls in short skirts, baby doll shirts, and cowboy boots dancing on stage while the band was playing. Bizarre. I didn’t spend to much time watching the band as I invited a bunch of friends from San Antonio and Austin. I spent most of my time outside talking with them.

No Line Dancing
Need both feet for line dancing ... hope this blogger recovers soon!
I was able to make it out friday night for a bit, and then went out Saturday night after a tragic bike accident I suffered earlier in the day. My original plans were to go line dancing with my high school friends a few towns over. I cut my toe up pretty bad and figured cowboy boots and dancing were not going to be good. So I stayed in town and went out with some people that work at the pool.

Nice Boots!
Route 66 is a great trip through the once-wild west.
This is kind of late, but Labor Day weekend we ditched our plans to go to SF and decided on a Route 66 roadtrip, following the historic highway from Flagstaff to California. It was fun. I just love quirky roadside attractions. My favorite was Headicus, the giant head (see picture above; note cowboy boots). More pictures to come. You'll want to see these.

Willie Tries a New Path
What a music legend Willie Nelson is:
At 72, Willie Nelson has traded in his cowboy boots for dreadlocks on the upcoming album, Country Man. I am really interested to see how it sounds. However, I just don't think it can work well. It's hard to play country music your whole life and then make a sudden stylistic shift. We'll see. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing him as Uncle Jesse in the upcoming Dukes of Hazzard film.

Lapse Of Sanity
It is my last evening in Bangkok and I am making my way through a shopping list of supplies for my next “outpost”: Contact lenses, prescription medications, film, batteries, and the blue ostrich leather cowboy boots I had custom made (a temporary lapse of sanity). I’ve been told that everything electronic or computer-related can be found in one place, at Pentip Plaza. So, having learned the hard way that taking a taxi in Bangkok means traveling at the speed of an inchworm in an air-conditioned capsule with thousands of others doing...

Intocable Concert
A blogger on the trials and tribulations of a Mexican Intocable Concert:
So a little over an hour more I see this ‘vaquero’ (cowboy) walking towards me (cowboy boots, tighter jeans, plaid shirt, jean jacket and black cowboy hat). Now David had mentioned before that for these kinds of concerts everyone wears there cowboy outfits but I hadn’t really taken him seriously, seeing that no boys that I know in America (especially not in Dickinson!) would be caught dead dressed as a cowboy, except maybe for Halloween. But not only was David dressed like that but all his friends and pretty much everyone and their mother at the concert was too.

The Veep in Boots
I'm trying to figure out why the reporter picked up on Al Gore's footwear.
On April 1 INdTV transformed into Current and publicly resurfaced for a preview press screening at its stylish two-story headquarters--exposed brick walls and beams, wood floors, modern and minimalist art. Flat-screen TVs everywhere glowed with Current's new logo, four green squares reminiscent of a Josef Albers painting. Gore, wearing a gray suit, open black-collared shirt and black cowboy boots, amiably opened the press conference and reiterated what his network was not. "We have no intention of being a Democratic channel, a liberal channel or...

Fashion Expert Talks On History of Fetish
Cowboys boots: the exception to the rule.
"The naked foot itself is not as erotically appealing, the shoe raises up the foot and gives it mystery and allure so it's not just a piece of meat," Steele said. According to Steele, since the 1880s, high heeled shoes have been almost entirely associated with femininity with the exception of cowboy boots.

Something Smelly in Seattle, But It Isn't Tuna
Greater Tuna is one of those great underground classics. Check it out if it plays near you.
Last night we had a chance to see the third play in the incredibly funny Greater Tuna Trilogy: “Red, White and Tuna.” (Play one is “Greater Tuna.” Play two is “A Tuna Christmas.”) In these plays, there is rarely a throwaway line – everything is quotable and fall-down funny. But last night my favorite line emerged when characters Bertha Bumiller and her fiancé Arliss Struby were arguing about whether he would wear cowboy boots to their wedding. Arliss’ sentiments:

Real Texans
I'm so disgusted right now; I almost want to say I'm too disgusted to call myself a Texan. I've been able reconcile what I consider being a real Texan and being a fake Texan. Real Texans feel a need to not have government get involved in their relationships. Fake Texans spend their time talking about how they're from Texas and don't their cowboy boots look good? And fake Texans have their barbeques at their "ranch" where nothing is raised outside of Crawford Texas catered by people who don't know the first damn thing about barbeques.

What to Wear With Boots
I'm going to side with the former lot, I think. There are two parts to my thinking. Firstly, I think bare legs and cowboy boots are great. But. I think cowboy boots have had their day, so if I declare that all boots and bare legs are bad, cowboy boots will slip slip slip to the bottom of the pile for a while. Secondly, corned beef legs (albeit corned beef legs made golden brown with the aid of a bottle) just don't look good in heavy winter boots. It's sad, but it's a fact.
