Lead And Be Lead
In the arena where training occurs, those clues and many others form a foundation that the trainer uses to forge a relationship with the horse. The two don't share a common language; yet, the horse will approach the trainer and wait for him to become the leader. The trainer brings that about not through coercion, but through understanding the horse's nature and using subtle persuasion to alleviate the horse's natural instinct to flee.

Can't Curb My Enthusiasm
Horse-trainer interaction is key to successful horse training.
And like us humans interact differently with each other , so horses have different energies. Invariably, the ride with the first horse will be pardon the phrase "a horse of a different color" with the second shooter. Different energies. The first horse, Picken rated real well with, wasnt in racetrack wanting to be in the lead.

You might useI have been talking with a few people about some of the things I do with hay twine. A few of them put links to my site (which is very cool to me.) So, I thought I better put a few pictures of some of the things on here. I don't have pictures of everything on here but I will update it again.

Sleep Tight
A useful report on horse bedding and suppliesIf you use wood pellets for horse bedding, you may have heard of the brand Equine Fresh. There are many brands of wood pellets out there and I suspect there will be many more since wood pellets are quickly becoming the preferred bedding for horse owners around the U.S.

Walk Your Horse Like A Dog
A nice post on walkingYes, I did say walk your horse like a dog. By that I mean lead your horse by the halter and take him for a walk like you would your dog. I have done this over the years with my horses and I think it is one the best ways to bond with your horse.

Natural Training
Some ideas on natural horse trainingWhat is Natural Horsemanship anyway? The answer may depend on who you ask. The most common definition I could find is training based on communication with the horse. We have all seen the advertisements on television or in magazines. Images of seemingly ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things with horses. Riding bridleless, Jumping over obstacles, or simply just walking onto a trailer they had always refused.

Review: Horsez
Good write-up on the Horsez gameI recently got a copy of the new Horsez game for the PC (Windows XP). The plan was to play it and write a review for others who might be interested. I’ve only played for a couple hours, but wanted to share a preview of the experience so far in case it’s on your holiday wish list.

Horse Deduction
On tax day, an appropriate post on the deductibility of horses and horse equipment.
Legitimate horse businesses (according to the IRS) seem to be: breeding operations, equine camps and workshops, boarding, riding lessons with a horse that’s not your personal pleasure horse and horse racing. Apparently if you give occassional lessons to the neighbor kids on your own personal pleasure horse, it’s not advisable to deduct your horse expenses from your personal income tax.

San Antonio's Riverwalk
If you're in San Antonio, check out the horse carriages at night.
Now I’m in San Antonio. And there’s no tumbleweed, no steers, and no cowboy hats. OK, correction, I saw one horse - they bring out the horse-drawn carriages at night - with an awkwardly tied-on cowboy hat.

Harness
Everything you wanted to know about horse harnesses.
If you want to have your horse pull a cart, a wagon or even a sleigh, you will need one important piece of tack, the harness. A harness connects your horse to the cart or other conveyance and gives you a way to control the horse. There are several harness models, from standard driving harnesses to harnesses for horses that compete in sulky races. Of course, just like with other types of tack, you can find leather or nylon harnesses.

Lowry's Western Shop Burns Down
People from all over the eastern U.S. shopped for western gear at Lowry's.
Gail Lowry Cecchetti watched in disbelief early Saturday as firefighters worked to douse flames that heavily damaged the business that began in the basement of her parents' home in 1979.
The fire gutted Lowry's Western Shop, 935 Henderson Ave., Canton Township, and left other businesses in the shopping plaza with smoke and water damage.
But hours after firefighters cleared the scene, Cecchetti along with numerous friends and family started to secure the building and contemplate plans to rebuild the business.

The Norse Burial Ground at Cumwhitton
People have ridden horses for a long time as these old, old horse spurs indicate. Click through for a fascinating website.
An account of the 10th century Norse burials discovered at Cumwhitton, south-east of Carlisle in Cumbria in 2004 and excavated by Oxford Archaeology whose website hosts the report. Despite their widespread presence in north-west Europe, Viking burials are extremely rare, especially in places outside their normal sphere or settlement or cultural influence. The six Cumwhitton graves are significant not merely on account of their rich furnishings, which included numerous brooches, swords and horse equipment but also because the east-west orientation...
